Affected by the T86 policy, Shein and Temu's sales dropped sharply

It is learned that according to a report by Bloomberg, Shein's sales in the United States fell by 16% to 41% in the five days from February 5, 2025, while Temu, a subsidiary of Pinduoduo, saw its sales fall by 32% during this period.

The decline in sales is mainly related to the adjustment of US tariff policy. The Trump administration canceled the "de minimis" tax-free policy. Previously, the policy allowed small packages worth less than $800 to enter the United States duty-free, and cross-border e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu took advantage of this policy to attract American consumers with low-priced goods. After the policy adjustment, consumers are worried that commodity prices may rise in the future, which leads to delays or reductions in purchasing behavior.

In addition to policy adjustments, seasonal factors, intensified market competition, etc. may also have had a certain impact on sales.

Faced with policy adjustments and market changes, Temu has begun to take measures to respond, adjusting its supply chain through a "semi-trusteeship" model and giving up actual control over its Chinese supply chain.

The decline in sales of Shein and Temu in the US market highlights the far-reaching impact of policy changes on the cross-border e-commerce industry.

Although the two companies are actively adjusting their supply chains and market strategies, the recovery of sales in the short term still faces challenges. In the future, they may need to further optimize their cost structures while looking for new market growth points to cope with the changing international trade environment.
