What is Indian ISI? Indian ISI Review
ISI stands for Indian Standards Institution. The ISI mark is a certification mark in India. In the past 63 years (BIS's predecessor, the Indian Standards Institute, began implementing product certification programs in 1955 ), it has become synonymous with high-quality products in India and surrounding markets.

Background of ISI

In 1955, India began to implement the "ISI Mark Certification System", which was mainly voluntary. However, in order to protect the interests of consumers, the central government has passed laws to determine 109 compulsory certification products. These products mainly involve bulk consumer goods and products related to energy conservation and consumer safety and health. The electronic and electrical products covered mainly include small household appliances (such as electric irons, electric stoves, electric heaters, etc.), switches, incandescent lamps, wires and cables, etc. On January 28, 2004, the Indian Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued a notice stipulating that for all imported products that fall within the scope of the 109 compulsory import certifications of the Indian Bureau of Standards, foreign manufacturers or Indian importers must first apply to the Indian Bureau of Standards for an import product certification certificate. Customs will release imported goods based on the certification certificate, and such products are subject to mandatory inspection.

Products subject to compulsory certification by India's ISI must pass testing at BIS-approved laboratories and obtain test reports.

India ISI certification process

On April 1, 1987, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officially replaced the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) as India's statutory national standards and certification management agency.

BIS certification is divided into foreign manufacturer application procedures and Indian importer application procedures according to different applicants. The main process of applying for certification is that the applicant submits an application and submits relevant documents and corresponding inspection reports;

BSI will issue a certificate to the applicant after the factory review, inspection and verification are passed. The certificate holder must pay BIS an annual marking fee and certificate fee.

BIS monitors and certifies product quality through routine supervision and inspection and testing of samples in factories and the market. BIS certification recognizes the CB test reports of products in the designated product catalog. Domestic manufacturers can apply after obtaining the CB report, which can save time and money.

Products certified by BIS can have the ISI certification mark affixed to them.

India ISI brief process

1. The factory prepares certification materials

2. BIS reviews the information and appoints factory inspectors

3. The factory inspector confirms the schedule and specific time of the factory inspection with the factory

4. Factory inspection and sampling test

5. BIS audit test and factory inspection report issuance certificate

India ISI included products

Starting from September 1, 2003, India needs to hold the certification mark of the Indian Standards Association (ISI) when importing the following 24 products. These products include immersion heaters, electric irons, electric stoves, radiators, household switches, light bulbs, circuit breakers, fuses, switchgear, cables, meters and transformers. As of 2017, including the above 24 products, a total of 159 products including steel, household appliances, cylinders and food colorings need to obtain certification from the Indian Standards Association before they can be imported.
