It is learned that on December 15, the US anti-counterfeiting organization The Counterfeit Report (TCR) issued a warning to holiday consumers, saying that Walmart and Amazon are full of "fakes, imitations and fraudulent products" that may eventually fall into the hands of consumers.
“Both Walmart and Amazon are direct retailers of counterfeit, fraudulent and knockoff goods, in addition to enabling third parties to sell a large number of fake goods originating from China,” TCR noted.
U.S. Customs Assistant District Port Director Hans Leiterman said they saw "57 million packages" between November and January, which they believe is the peak holiday shopping period. But according to the organization, the items that come through during this time "are often counterfeit merchandise."
TCR says it has found and removed more than 400 million counterfeit listings on Walmart and Amazon, as well as eBay, Wish, Newegg, DHgate and Alibaba, and that’s just a tiny fraction of the fakes that are shipped to or reach consumers.
“Amazon and Walmart frequently ignore complaints from brand owners, and sellers may relist listings after they have been removed,” the group warned.
According to TCR's alert, more than 500,000 brand owners are now fighting back against what they say are counterfeits on Amazon.com. As of Dec. 17, the group's most recently reported counterfeit listings from Amazon include various memory cards, pirated books, lithium batteries and a Playstation controller. Counterfeit products reported by Walmart include Gillette razor blades, lip enhancers and flashlights.
Walmart and Amazon have both dealt with reports of counterfeit products in the past. In 2018, a Walmart spokesperson said the company had a "zero tolerance" policy for counterfeit products. In October 2021, a Walmart spokesperson said the platform has a team responsible for checking products to help ensure that products and sellers meet our high expectations.
In May of this year, a report from Amazon showed that the platform destroyed more than 2 million suspected counterfeit products sent to its fulfillment centers by third-party sellers in 2020, according to CNN. It also claimed that it had blocked more than 10 billion suspected bad listings before release, and less than 0.01% of the products it sold received counterfeit complaints from shoppers.
