Biden signs bill banning imports from Xinjiang, China

It is learned that according to Reuters, US President Joe Biden signed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act on Thursday, which will ban imports from China's Xinjiang region due to concerns about forced labor, which has aroused angry condemnation from China.

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act is part of the U.S. push back against Beijing’s treatment of China’s Uyghur Muslim minority, which Washington calls a genocide. The law was passed unanimously in the House and Senate earlier this month after a push by U.S. lawmakers.

The bill imposes a near-total ban on imports from Xinjiang by requiring suppliers to first prove their products are not made with forced labor.

Some goods have been designated as “priority categories” for enforcement action, such as cotton, tomatoes and polysilicon used in solar panel manufacturing. Xinjiang is a major global supplier of cotton and solar panels.

In this regard, China firmly opposes the US Congress's interference in China's internal affairs by using the Xinjiang issue. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said in an interview with the media that some US politicians are fabricating lies and creating trouble on such issues in the name of human rights, using political manipulation and economic bullying to contain China and hinder its development.
