Amazon Canada announced on Monday that it will hire 15,000 new warehouse and delivery workers this fall and increase wages for its front-line employees to between $17 and $21.65 per hour, up from a previous starting salary of $16.
Currently, Amazon Canada has 25,000 employees in 25 communities in five provinces. According to Statistics Canada, the country added 90,200 jobs in August and the unemployment rate reached 7.1%. This is the lowest level since the outbreak last year. Amazon needs to recruit a lot of people to make up for the labor shortage.
In addition to the salary increase for front-line employees, Amazon said existing employees will also receive an additional pay of $1.6 to $2.2 per hour.
Earlier this year, in order to add 75,000 new employees, Amazon announced that it would increase the wages of new employees in the United States to $17 per hour to attract talent. Last week, Amazon announced that it would pay full college tuition for employees across the United States, a move that will cost the company more than $1 billion in the next four years.
