CBP Seized 29 Counterfeit Shipments in January, Worth $2.88 Million

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized $2.88 million worth of counterfeit goods in January, including shoes, wallets, designer clothing, handbags, jewelry, etc.

In Chicago, 29 shipments were seized in January, CBP official LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke said. On average, about one shipment of counterfeit goods was discovered every day.

Most of the fakes were reportedly shipped from inland China, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Russia, the Philippines, Thailand, Mexico and Israel, with most of the goods being jewellery, including rings, necklaces, bracelets and watches.

LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke added that CBP officers will be on the front lines of protecting the U.S. economy and preventing counterfeit goods from entering the U.S. marketplace to better protect American citizens and businesses.

It is learned that American consumers spend more than $100 billion on counterfeit goods every year, and about 20% of the world's counterfeit goods are shipped to the United States.

It is reported that CBP has also established a column "The Truth Behind Counterfeit Goods" on its official website to raise consumers' awareness of counterfeit and pirated goods. In addition, CBP also encourages citizens to actively report "counterfeit goods" and has opened an electronic reporting channel to support citizens' anonymous reporting and crack down on any suspected violations of trade laws or regulations related to US imported goods.
