The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach handled record-breaking container volumes in February, with throughput increasing by 7.3%!

The Port of Los Angeles reported handling 857,764 TEUs in February, the busiest February on record for the nation’s largest container import port. Loaded imports reached 424,073 TEUs, up 2.7% from last year.

Compared with the same month last year, total throughput increased by more than 7.3%, showing that the "container terminal speed" of the Port of Los Angeles continues to improve. Two months into 2022, the total cargo volume of the Port of Los Angeles has reached 1,723,360 TEUs, an increase of 5.4% over the first two months of 2021.

“The collaborative efforts of longshoremen, terminal operators and waterfront partners have increased flow and productivity at the Port,” said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. “Since November, the number of containers leaving the terminals has increased 16 percent.”

The Port of Long Beach also reported a record month for container handling in February, handling 796,560 TEUs, up 3.2% from February 2021. Both ports have continued to defer the collection of "container detention fees" in 2022 since the plan was announced on October 25, 2021, reporting a combined 64% drop in container stacks at terminals in February due to slowed Chinese New Year shipping volumes.

It is learned that in the face of overloaded US ports, California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to invest a record $2.3 billion in California ports to ease the tight port pressure in the United States.
