Many sellers may cease operations! Etsy is in big trouble this time!

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, Etsy sellers are organizing a strike recently, that is, stopping operations to protest Etsy's plan to increase sales commissions.

It is reported that Etsy previously announced that from April 11, 2022, sellers' sales commission will increase to 6.5%.

It is reported that the strike will begin on April 11. Etsy sellers will adjust their stores to "holiday mode" in protest, and sellers also call on buyers not to purchase products on the Etsy platform between April 11 and 18.

It is understood that as of the afternoon of March 30, nearly 17,00 people have signed an online petition in support of the strike, but it is unclear how many of them are Etsy sellers. Many commentators listed their dissatisfaction with Etsy's various measures, but the most direct fuse was: Etsy will increase sellers' sales commission from 5% to 6.5%.

One petitioner wrote that Etsy implements a policy that puts "buyers first and sellers second" and is seeking to become the next Amazon.

Another petitioner wrote that Etsy has never rewarded sellers, but has only mocked, ignored and exploited them, and Etsy is becoming one of the most profitable technology companies in the world.

It is reported that if the price is effective, it means that Etsy has successfully doubled the buyer's commission in four years. For sellers, this will greatly reduce the income efficiency, which means that they must pay another 12-15% for each item sold. You know, in addition to sales commissions, sellers also need to conduct off-site and on-site advertising promotions and invest a lot of money in marketing. Etsy may make it difficult for sellers to "walk".

It is understood that Etsy sellers hope to prevent the increase of Etsy's sales commission through this strike, and require Etsy to launch certification for "second-hand refurbished products", end its star seller program, and cancel on-site advertising promotion fees.

According to the group Collective Action in Tech, the number of newly formed unions in the entire technology industry hit a new high in 2021, including the Alphabet Union, Code for America, etc. The strike by Etsy sellers is the latest example of the technology labor movement. Polls show that 77% of Americans support employees' collective bargaining rights. This means that Etsy sellers are likely to win.
