Canadian online sales growth slowed in May as demand for electronics fell

It is learned that according to data from Mastercard SpendingPulse, Canada's total retail sales (excluding automobiles) in May this year increased by 5.6% compared with the same period in 2021, and increased by 17.4% compared with the same period in 2019.

In addition, Canada's online sales in May this year fell 17.4% year-on-year compared with the same period in 2021, but increased 101.4% compared with the same period in 2019. The main reason is that consumers returned to physical stores and the online shopping craze subsided.

Data shows that in-store sales in May increased by 13.2% year-on-year and 6.7% compared with the same period in 2019. More consumers are eager to go to the store in person to experience new looks and buy new clothes.

The social calendar piled up due to the epidemic has driven the growth of the clothing industry. With the arrival of graduation season, wedding season and holidays, Canadians' demand for clothing increased by 65.9% year-on-year in May, an increase of 17.1% over the same period in 2019. This is the highest growth rate in the clothing industry since 2022.

Canadians' demand for jewelry accessories remains strong, with sales in this category increasing 46.2% year-on-year in May compared to the same period in 2021 and 11.5% compared to the same period in 2022.

In addition, Canadians' demand for furniture and home furnishings and home care also increased in May. However, demand for electronic products declined, with sales in this category falling 2.3% year-on-year, but still higher than the same period in 2019.

"This spring, more consumers are preparing for upcoming outdoor activities and travel, and spending on clothing has increased significantly," said Steve Sadove, senior consultant at Mastercard. "But as online inflation remains high, future consumer spending may be affected."
