Walmart will monopolize 27.6% of the U.S. grocery e-commerce market! Continue to lead Amazon!

It is learned that according to the latest forecast of eMarket, in 2022, Walmart will be the largest grocery retailer in the United States, with sales reaching US$38.72 billion and a market share of 27.6%.

Wendy Louie-Lam, an analyst at eMarket, said Walmart's massive store footprint will put it in the No. 1 spot again. The retail giant currently has 5,300 stores in the U.S., many of which are in rural areas, making it the only grocery retailer in many areas.

Instacart will continue to rank second. Like last year, Instacart will still surpass Amazon by a narrow margin this year. According to forecasts, Instacart's sales in 2021 will reach $30.6 billion, slightly higher than Amazon's $29.49 billion.

Additionally, the two companies have similar shares of the U.S. grocery market, with Amazon at approximately 21.0% and Instacart at approximately 21.8%.

Louie-Lam said both companies have their own advantages. Instacart's partnerships with local retailers give it an "upper hand" over Amazon, especially in the fresh food sector. Amazon's lower prices on items on its shelves make it more cost-effective than Instacart.

Inflation is driving the growth of the US grocery e-commerce market, which has led to a shift in consumer purchasing behavior. Although consumers are shopping less frequently, the volume of orders is increasing. On the other hand, due to the rising cost of living, consumers want to save money, and there has been a significant increase in the demand for "pick up at the pickup point".

The U.S. grocery e-commerce market is forecast to see double-digit growth by 2026, but it will still be modest compared to the triple-digit growth experienced in 2019 and 2020. As consumer demand for grocery delivery grows significantly, delivery companies like DoorDash, Uber, Shipt, and Instacart will benefit greatly.
