Target to hire 100,000 seasonal employees in preparation for 2022 peak season

Target to hire 100,000 seasonal employees in preparation for 2022 peak season

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, on September 22, Target announced that it will recruit 100,000 seasonal workers for this year's holiday shopping season, and it will start lowering prices in the first week of October to provide holiday discounts earlier.

Last year, Target hired 100,000 workers for the peak season due to tight labor supply. This year, it did not expand the recruitment because of the slowdown in the US economy. In the peak seasons of 2019 and 2022, the retail company aggressively hired about 130,000 seasonal workers due to the online shopping boom.

It is understood that the starting salary range for Target employees is $15 to $24 per hour, and the company also pointed out that more than 30% of seasonal employees will continue to work after the peak season ends.

Target also said it will bring forward its holiday sales, holding its first holiday "Deal Days" from Oct. 6 to Oct. 8 this year and extending its holiday price match guarantee from Oct. 6 to Dec. 24.

Target's announcement comes after Walmart announced it would hire 40,000 workers for the holidays, far fewer than the 150,000 workers it added last year, when over-hiring led to overstaffing that weighed on Walmart's first-quarter 2022 profits.

Faced with billions of dollars worth of unsold inventory and with continued notifications eroding consumers' disposable budgets, U.S. retailers are taking a more cautious approach to this year's holiday shopping season and are having to increase discounts to clear out excess inventory, the report said.

It is learned that Amazon, another major player in the US retail industry, has not yet released its recruitment plans. In recent years, the company usually announced the plan in October.
