US Teenagers Fall Consumption Survey: Amazon and Shein Are Popular

It is learned that according to the survey "Taking Stock with Teens" recently released by Piper Sandler, the spending of American teenagers this fall increased by 3% year-on-year and decreased by 2% compared with the same period last year.

 

Among teens, women continued to lead spending growth, with spending on beauty products (makeup, skincare and fragrance) up 20% year-over-year and makeup up 28% year-over-year, with spending also increasing on clothing (10%) and shoes (7%).

 

The survey shows that Nike is the preferred brand for all American teenagers when buying clothing (31% share) and shoes (60% share). Lululemon ranks second, followed by American Eagle, H&M and Shein.

 

In the beauty field, American teenagers like to buy at Ulta (42%), followed by Sephora (24%), Target (10%), Walmart (6%) and Amazon (5%). In the bag field, Coach is the most popular, with a market share far ahead of Michael Kors, which ranks second.

 

In addition, in terms of social media usage, TikTok successfully replaced Snapchat and became the favorite of American teenagers. Instagram ranked third. On the other hand, American teenagers are very concerned about environmental issues, and 53% of teenagers said they would consider carbon footprint when making purchases.

 

Here are some other findings from the survey:

 

  • Teens allocate 7% of their shopping to second-hand goods; 47% of teenagers have purchased second-hand goods; and 58% of teenagers have sold second-hand goods.
  • On average, teens spend 4.4 hours per day on social media.
  • Amazon remains the top destination for shopping, but Shein has further solidified its second position.
  • Consumers sought deals and discounts, reflected in a 13% year-on-year sales increase at discount online stores and an 8% drop in spending in the autumn.
  • Phone calls are the preferred method for teens to communicate and interact with retailers, followed by text messaging.
  • 87% of teens own an iPhone, and 88% of teens want an iPhone to be their next phone.
  • 31% of teens own an Apple Watch, a record high.
  • In the minds of teenagers, the most influential people are Andrew Tate, Emma Chamberlain, Kanye West, Mr. Beast, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
