The myth of over 100 million active users in a week is broken? Threads lost over 80% of its active users!

Mark Zuckerberg's Threads app surpassed 100 million active users in its first week, according to Sensor Tower, a website specializing in network analysis and metrics. But more than 80% of Instagram account registered users are no longer active on the social platform.

In response, Zuckerberg did not seem to be worried about the loss of active users and said it was normal.

Sensor Tower said Zuckerberg's new social network, created to compete with Twitter, had about 8 million daily active users as of July, an 82% drop from the 44 million active users who signed up on its first day.

The 82% active user churn rate seems even more surprising than the crazy growth rate of the app, which surpassed 100 million users just days after its launch on July 5 .

Zuckerberg struggles to retain users

Zuckerberg, who has extensive experience in the social media sector as CEO of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Threads, stressed in this context that a decline in active users is a common occurrence when launching a platform . According to his explanation, the development team is currently focusing on creating features aimed at retaining as many users as possible.

“The focus for the rest of the year is on improving fundamentals and retention. Stabilization will take time, but once it does, we’ll focus on growing the community.” In doing so, Zuckerberg showed confidence because this is not the first time they’ve faced a similar situation. The retention experience of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Stories, Reels gives us enough confidence, and I’m sure Threads is also on a good track,” he concluded.

While the app achieved millions of downloads in its first week alone, the lack of features such as direct messaging and content from big influencers has hampered Threads usage.

It is worth noting that several experts interviewed by The Korea Herald insisted that the initial success of Threads was largely due to its design (very similar to Musk's X) and the simple registration process (allowing login with a username and password). And the vast majority of users came from Instagram. Although Musk's rapid name change to Twitter was criticized by many users, X's users are still very stable, and even many inactive users have returned to the platform.
