High inflation can’t stop the passion for shopping! Mexico’s year-end peak season shopping trends

According to the latest research released by Kantar, despite the pressure of inflation, Mexicans' enthusiasm for year-end peak season consumption remains unabated. The study shows that Mexican consumers plan to spend 5,197 pesos, an increase of 6% or 283 pesos from the 4,914 pesos reported last year.

Mexican consumers will give an average of 16 gifts this Christmas, double what was reported a year ago, and eight in 10 will use their Christmas bonus to pay for them, according to new research conducted by Kantar.

The study also pointed out that the bonuses will also be used to buy clothing and shoes; buy party and dinner supplies; for household expenses; buy home appliances; for medical expenses and finally to pay off debts.

Additionally, 67% of consumers will shop in-store during the holidays, while the remaining 33% will shop online.

According to the study, the preferred physical stores for consumers to buy supplies and gifts are Walmart, Coppel, Liverpool, Suburbia, Bodega Aurrerá, Sears, Sanborns, Soriana and Chedrahui.

In terms of online shopping channels, Amazon, MercadoLibre, Liverpool, Walmart, Coppel, Shein, Sears, Chedrahui and El Palacio de Hierro are the most chosen platforms.

In terms of purchase categories, clothes or shoes are the most popular categories, followed by toys; women's or men's accessories; chocolate, biscuits and sweet bread; perfume or cologne; cosmetics and beauty products; books; video game consoles, video games and computer games.

Cell phones also made the list of popular purchases this year, along with gift cards or certificates; sports equipment; cash; home appliances; computer items; large electronics; wine and spirits and holiday travel items.

Regarding the methods Mexicans plan to use to research products, the research agency found that social media have become very important, with 60% planning to use them for this purpose. According to Kantar, when it comes to Christmas shopping, 64% of purchases will be made with cash, while only 25% will be made with credit cards and 29% with debit cards.
