Affirm data reveals: What did Americans buy the most on Black Friday this year?

It is learned that on December 6, payment company Affirm released consumption statistics of its US users during Black Friday Cyber Monday, and conducted a statistical analysis of consumers' consumption behavior and category trends during Black Friday Cyber Monday.

Data shows that American consumers prioritize practical items, such as fitness and home-related items, during Black Friday shopping:

  • Millennials, Gen Xers, and Boomers use Affirm to buy furniture, mattresses, and fitness equipment, while Gen Z spends heavily on PCs, tablets and accessories, automotive performance parts, and footwear.

  • From Black Friday to Cyber Monday, Affirm users spent the most at big retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Fitness equipment was the second-largest spending category, followed by furniture, mattresses and appliances.

  • Online travel services such as Expedia and Priceline were the most popular purchases on Cyber Monday, while home appliances were the most popular purchases on Black Friday.

  • On average, Affirm users spend the most per order on household items, such as bedding, mattresses, and vacuum cleaners, followed by travel.

Fitness-related items also topped the list by dollar spent, followed by consumer electronics, accessories, and beauty products:

  • The most popular fitness items include fitness mats, dumbbells, treadmills, heart rate belts, sports bottles and yoga mats.

  • Many of the top-selling items were also fitness-related, although consumer electronics (such as video game consoles, virtual reality headsets and headphones) and leggings were also very popular.

  • Oversized sunglasses were the most popular fashion accessory, with diamond jewellery, collectible sneakers and strappy leather sandals also making the list.

Compared with last year, this year's popular categories have undergone significant changes:

  • 2021 was the year of new TVs from big retailers, but new tires, smartphones and smartwatches were the hot purchases this year.

  • This year, shoppers turned their attention from makeup to hair care as hairdryers, shampoos, conditioners and serums replaced lipsticks and eye shadows.

  • Kitchen appliances and home electronics such as vacuum cleaners are more popular this year than bedding was last year.

While Cyber Monday at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET was the most popular shopping time in 2021, in 2022, Black Friday at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET is the most popular shopping time of the year.
