Americans wait until the last minute to shop! Prediction of hot-selling categories for Valentine's Day in 2023!

According to a recent survey by RetailMeNot, an online transaction and savings platform, 32% of American consumers will buy gifts in the week before Valentine's Day, and 2% will wait until Valentine's Day (February 14).

The survey also found that 40% of American consumers make Valentine's Day shopping two weeks in advance, and 11% of consumers make Valentine's Day purchases at least one month in advance.

Female consumers are more likely to buy Valentine’s Day gifts in advance than male consumers. According to a survey by RetailMeNot, 15% of women buy gifts a month in advance, compared to 9% of men. 47% of women buy gifts two weeks in advance, compared to 35% of men.

However, male consumers are more likely to buy gifts at the last minute. One-third of men will buy a gift during the week of Valentine’s Day, compared to only 29% of women. Three times as many men as women will buy a gift two to three days before Valentine’s Day (21% vs. 7%).

Two-thirds of U.S. consumers plan to buy Valentine’s Day gifts. On average, each person plans to spend $80. The most popular gifts for Valentine’s Day are:

  • Having a nice dinner at a restaurant (24%)

  • Holiday cards (12%)

  • Chocolate (10%)

  • Flowers (4%)

  • Jewelry (3%)

  • Sex toys/accessories and smartphones (3%)

The least popular gift was:

  • Clothes (2%)

  • Shopping/retail store gift cards (2%)

  • Perfume (1%)

  • Wallets/Handbags (1%)

  • Wine (1%)

By gender, women prefer experience products (8% vs. 4%) and chocolate (11% vs. 9%) more than men, while men want greeting cards more (16% vs. 6%).
