Shopify downloads fell 25% in Q2! Less than Shein, Amazon and Walmart!

It is learned that as Shopify tries to narrow the gap with Amazon by adding its B2B tool suite and hopes to compete with Amazon to improve competitiveness, the download volume of Shopify's application Shop has slowed down. According to Apptopia data, Shop downloads in the second quarter of 2022 fell by about 25% year-on-year to 5.9 million times. This is a far cry from the 11.9 million downloads of the Amazon app (an increase of 27%). Overall, Shop's downloads in the second quarter lagged behind Shein, Amazon and Walmart, ranking fourth.

Apptopia also found that user sessions on Shop fell by about 19% year-on-year in the second quarter. Shopify attaches great importance to the expansion of the Shop application because Shop provides Shopify with the opportunity to become a mature independent consumer brand that can compete with Amazon.

Although mobile app downloads are still on the rise, e-commerce demand has indeed declined in recent months as shoppers return to stores. By offering features such as express checkout products, ShopPay and Shop Pay Instalments, BNPL services, etc., Shopify hopes to entice buyers to stay in Shopify's e-commerce system.

While download growth has slowed, Shop has remained one of the top five most downloaded shopping apps in every quarter since its launch in April 2020. The slowdown in Shopify downloads could indicate difficulties scaling the Shop platform, or it could simply reflect slower consumer spending due to rising global inflation.

It is understood that the biggest challenge facing Shopify is to transform its "Shop" platform into a shopping destination that repeat customers continue to visit. In order to do this, analysts suggest that Shopify needs to optimize its package logistics tracking function. It is reported that Shopify's package logistics information tracking function has become a "killer feature" since its launch in 2020, standing out among many e-commerce platforms.
