It is learned that according to the latest survey "Taking Stock With Teens" conducted by the US financial institution Piper Sandler, Shein's position in the hearts of Generation Z is second only to Amazon. The survey shows that 52% of Generation Z in the United States list Amazon as their preferred shopping website, 8% of Generation Z prefer Amazon, and some Generation Z are also interested in Nike (6%) and Lululemon (4%). The Shein app is popular among female consumers of Generation Z. According to the survey, 44% of female consumers of Generation Z are satisfied with shopping on Shein. Among adults of other age groups, 22% hold the same view. Shein has been growing its presence in the US online market since 2012. Initially, Shein attracted attention for offering the latest fashion trends at more affordable prices. Shein has not only been successful in the US market. Last year, Shein overtook Shopee to become the world’s most popular shopping app with 229 million downloads, while Amazon ranked fourth with 195 million downloads. Shein faces tougher regulation in Brazil Members of the Brazilian Joint Parliament (FPE) proposed that it cancel the policy of tax exemption for purchases below US$50 on cross-border platforms, including foreign platforms such as Shein, Shopee, Wish and Aliexpress. The chairman of FPE pointed out that platforms like Shein often split a purchase into several packages to avoid taxes, which results in the invoicing amount being much lower than when multiple packages are shipped together. The chairman said that Brazil receives about 500,000 packages from China every day, which causes the country to lose billions in tax revenue. It is unclear whether the pressure from lawmakers has had any impact on Shein, but Brazilian consumers in recent days have reported being slapped with large taxes on their purchases of products. In some cases, the taxes exceeded the purchase price. Previously, a report released by Brazilian bank Itaú BBA showed that Shein currently accounts for 27% of Brazil's online clothing market and 5% of Brazil's entire clothing retail market. The report shows that in February 2023, Shein's visits in Brazil increased by 128% over the previous year, accounting for 39% of the total visits to the online clothing platform. In February 2022, this proportion was 19%. In terms of downloads, Shein has a 76% share of apparel app downloads as of February 2023. This is a 42% increase compared to February 2022 (56%). In addition, the number of daily active users of the Shein app has also seen a significant increase, with a year-on-year increase of 140% in February 2023.
