The US e-commerce market has exceeded one trillion US dollars for the first time! The five major categories have the highest revenue

It is learned that according to Comscore data, the size of the US e-commerce market reached 1.09 trillion US dollars in 2022, breaking the 1 trillion US dollar mark for the first time, with sales in the fourth quarter reaching 332.2 billion US dollars.

According to Comscore, the growth of the U.S. e-commerce market continues to accelerate. Although it only grew by $129 billion in the four years after 2013, the next four years nearly tripled revenue to $264 billion. In the two years since the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. e-commerce sales have increased by nearly $300 billion.

Adobe said the holiday season at the end of last year hit another record high, with total sales of $211.7 billion in November and December. Adobe said that although prices rose due to inflation, discounts drove additional sales. Comscore estimates that online sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 will be approximately $239 billion.



Here are the categories with the fastest and highest revenue growth:

The top five categories with the highest revenue are:

1. Grocery/baby/pets: $219 billion;

2. Apparel and accessories: $175 billion;

3. Computers and peripherals: $117 billion;

4. Consumer electronics: $85 billion;

5. Furniture and appliances: $76 billion.

The five fastest growing categories are:

1. Event tickets: increased by 75%;

2. Digital content: 60% growth;

3. Clothing and accessories: 37% growth;

4. Video games and accessories: 31% growth;

5. Home and garden: 25% growth.

In the United States, mobile e-commerce and social e-commerce are growing rapidly. Comscore's latest business status report stated that mobile e-commerce is growing at twice the rate of PC e-commerce sales, with US mobile e-commerce sales increasing 26% year-on-year in the fourth quarter.



Comscore said social commerce is also growing, with engagement with sponsored content from retailers and brands on Facebook up 153% and Instagram up 175%. Relative newcomer TikTok also saw growth, with a 33% increase in "ads" in the consumer goods category and a 150% increase in engagement with DTC brands.

However, views that do not necessarily directly translate into sales for US retail and consumer goods brands grew a staggering 407% from 2020 to 2022. At the same time, 86% of TikTok users also use Amazon, indicating that social commerce is becoming an important part of the retail ecosystem.
