Walmart showed investors at an event the automation it plans to apply to manage inventory, fill shelves and meet the needs of its online customers in a faster and more profitable way, supported by warehouse robots. Walmart is also working with warehouse technology company Symbotic to expand its warehouse management business to its 42 regional distribution centers. The company expects two-thirds of its stores to be automated within three years, and 55% of its fulfillment center capacity will move through automated facilities. Walmart did not specify how much it will invest in warehouse automation projects. But the average cost can be reduced by 20%. The retailer also has 46 distribution centers to support its fresh food business and an automated grocery distribution center in Shafter, California. It plans to open another grocery distribution center in Lancaster, Texas, later this year and another in Spartanburg, South Carolina, next year to meet grocery delivery needs. Walmart is also testing mini fulfillment centers in stores to fulfill online grocery orders. Editor ✎Estella/ Disclaimer: This article is copyrighted and may not be reproduced without permission. |
