The scale of cross-border buyers in the United States continues to expand and may grow to 69.8 million in 2023!

According to the latest forecast from Inside Intelligence, the number of cross-border online shoppers in the United States will reach 69.8 million in 2023, ranking second in the world. China (with a large population) will rank first, with a population of 280 million.

The United States will have 2.3 million new cross-border buyers by 2023

Inside intelligence predicts that the number of cross-border online buyers in the United States will increase by 3.4% year-on-year in 2023. This growth rate is less than half of the 7.0% in 2020 and only one-third of the 10.2% in 2016. Although the growth in the number of cross-border buyers will slow down compared with previous years, the popularity of cross-border online shopping continues to grow.

Before the outbreak of the epidemic, the US cross-border e-commerce market took off rapidly due to factors such as language support, convenient payment, free or low-cost shipping and returns.

Nearly one-third of US online buyers will shop cross-border by 2024

The number of U.S. cross-border online shoppers has grown by nearly 25% since 2019. Inside Intelligence predicts that 71.8 million U.S. consumers aged 14 and over will become cross-border buyers next year.

Product shortages and supply chain challenges caused by the pandemic have led more U.S. consumers to buy products from overseas sellers. In terms of cross-border buyer penetration, the United States ranks in the middle of the 21 countries tracked by Inside Intelligence.

Inflation will add new impetus to cross-border online shopping

Price increases have eroded consumer brand loyalty: According to a January 2023 Mirakl poll, only 22% of U.S. consumers said they stick with trusted brands regardless of price, while 86% said inflation forces them to seek out lower prices when shopping.
