Etsy tests 'local shipping badges' to show buyers products that are closer

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, Etsy is testing a new badge in the United States that is designed to highlight when items can be shipped from locations near the buyer.

Etsy said the move will help it reduce the distance items have to be shipped and minimize the carbon footprint associated with purchases, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Badge Introduction

As part of the testing phase, the Etsy Local Shipping badge will be displayed to buyers within approximately 300 miles of a store’s shipping origin, or in the same state.

Etsy will roll out the badge on product listings, informing potential buyers that they could potentially reduce their carbon emissions if they choose to purchase the item.

Etsy determines whether a seller's products can obtain the "Local Shipping Badge" based on the following two factors:

  • Shorter shipping distances: Local shipping significantly reduces the total shipping distance from Etsy’s global baseline, contributing to a greener shipping process.

  • Lower Shipping Emissions: Items that qualify for this badge are more likely to be shipped via ground services, which have lower emissions compared to other modes of transportation.

Benefits of the Etsy “Local Shipping Badge”

Etsy claims that early test results show that the local shipping badge can greatly stimulate buyers to spend. Data shows that the badge increases buyer engagement and increases the percentage of buyers adding items to their carts and successfully completing their orders.

As a leading online marketplace, Etsy remains committed to fostering connections between buyers and sellers from around the world in a sustainable way. Building on this success, the company plans to launch similar badges in international markets in the near future.

Some sellers are worried that if their products do not get the badge, the chances of buyers buying them will be greatly reduced. In response, Etsy said that buyers who are far away from the store will not encounter any information that hinders their purchase due to the seller's geographical location.
