According to a survey by Slickdeals, Americans are spending less on impulse purchases this year due to cost of living pressures. Slickdeals surveyed 2,000 American consumers, of which 38% said they had reduced impulse purchases this year, compared with 14% and 16% in 2022 and 2021, respectively. The survey shows that the number of impulse purchases by Americans has decreased this year, averaging only six times per month, which is much lower than 2022 (12 times per month) and 2021 (9 times per month). On the other hand, people are also spending less on impulse purchases overall. On average, the amount of impulse purchases per person per month is $151, which is down from previous years ($314 in 2022, $276 in 2021, and $183 in 2020). Seven in ten Americans say they have saved money by curbing impulse buying habits, an increase from 58% in 2022. 77% of Americans are being more careful with their budgets this year due to inflation. Of these, 39% say they are making more impulse purchases on necessities than luxuries (19%). The most common categories of impulse purchases this year are apparel (55%), food and groceries (50%), and home furnishings (42%). A third of respondents (35%) said some of their impulse purchases were made to avoid FOMO (fear of missing out), a significant drop from 2022 (67%). Vitaly Pecharsky, head of deals at Slickdeals, commented: “Shoppers said they were more likely to make impulse purchases on necessities than luxuries. At the same time, they also reported a decrease in impulse purchases. This can help them save a lot of money in the long run.” The survey results show that this year, 36% of respondents admitted that most of their purchases were impulsive, which is much lower than 73% in 2022. In terms of purchase channels, 48% of people said that they shop most on their mobile phones (up from 33% in 2022). In addition, 43% of people are more likely to make impulse purchases while lying in bed (down from 71% in 2022). In 2022, 32% of people said they would only make impulse purchases when items were discounted, while this year 58% said the same. The survey found that more than half of people (53%) always or often look for deals or coupons before shopping. According to a Slickdeals survey, Americans' favorite impulse purchases this year include: 1. Clothing – 55% 2. Food/Groceries – 50% 3. Home Furnishings – 42% 4. Shoes – 32% 5. Takeaway – 23% 6.
