List of Canada's hot-selling beauty and cosmetics categories in the first half of 2023

It is learned that according to the latest data from Circana, in the first half of 2023, the beauty category continued to top the list of Canada's fastest growing industries, with sales revenue increasing by 19% year-on-year to US$1.7 billion in the first half of the year, and sales performance in various categories was strong, with sales increasing across the board.

 

The study shows that in 2023, revenue and sales of almost all beauty categories in the Canadian market will increase, with perfume seeing the highest price increase. Although consumers in the country are also facing price pressures and financial uncertainty, beauty products continue to be their first choice for consumption.

  • Sales revenue increased 25% year-on-year in the first half of the year, making it the fastest growing category;

  • During this period, the category contributed 40% of the beauty industry’s total revenue;

  • Facial makeup sales increased 33% year-on-year, with blush, tanning and highlighting products and setting sprays seeing the fastest sales growth;

  • Lip products are the fastest growing segment in beauty products, with sales increasing 42% in the first half of the year. The strongest growth came from hybrid products such as lip oils and lip balms.

  • Lip products that are moisturizing, nourishing and slightly tinted grew the fastest. Although these products only accounted for 25% of lip makeup sales, they contributed more than 40% of sales revenue growth in the first half of the year.


 

Skin Care


  • The Canadian beauty market has the largest sales share and is still growing, with sales revenue increasing by 16% in the first half of the year;

  • Makeup products continued the "skin care" trend, and products with skin care effects performed well;

  • Brightening skin tone and improving skin health remain the focus of skin care product consumption in the region.

 

Hair Care Products


  • In the first half of 2023, sales revenue of hair care products increased by 17%;

  • Hair styling products saw the fastest growth, followed by hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners and masks, as consumers continued their at-home care and rituals while also getting ready for outings.

 

 

Overall, Canadian consumers returned to physical stores more in the first half of the year, and the average purchase expenditure continued to increase, especially in the purchase of cosmetics and perfumes. Physical store sales exceeded online sales, with sales increasing by 20% year-on-year in the first half of the year, accounting for 75% of sales.

 

Overall, online sales of beauty products in Canada remain at a high level, with every category achieving growth in the first half of the year, but the growth rate has stabilized since 2019, with the cosmetics segment dominated by lip makeup and facial makeup experiencing the strongest growth.
