Mobile commerce in the U.S. is worth $280 billion and is expected to account for 53% of online sales during the holiday season!

It is learned that on August 21, according to foreign media reports, the latest report from Adobe Analytics showed that US mobile sales from January to July 2024 hit a new high of US$280.4 billion, an increase of 10.2% over the same period last year.

It is understood that Adobe Analytics' comprehensive data is based on the analysis of more than one trillion visits to US retail websites, covering 100 million SKUs and 18 categories. In January, mobile accounted for 46.7% of total online sales, which increased to 49.3% in July, and the average share for seven months was 47.7%. During this period, promotional activities such as Prime Day further promoted growth, making mobile sales exceed desktop shopping, accounting for 51%.

Data shows that the shift to mobile shopping is particularly evident in categories such as groceries and personal care. From January to July, mobile online sales of groceries reached $66.9 billion, a year-on-year increase of 15%. In July, mobile accounted for 68.2% of the total online grocery sales. Personal care products, including cosmetics, had mobile online sales of $22.6 billion from January to July, a year-on-year increase of 7.6%. For the clothing category, mobile devices have also become the main transaction channel, accounting for 60.8% of sales in July.

Adobe Chief Analyst Vivek Pandya pointed out that the growth of mobile e-commerce is driven by consumers' demand for convenience and speed, but it is expected that the purchase of bulk goods will also begin to shift to smaller mobile phone screens. Currently, the size of the shopping basket on mobile devices is 32% smaller than that on desktops, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for brands. By enhancing the mobile shopping experience, revenue will be effectively increased.

Adobe predicts that mobile shopping is expected to drive 53% of total online sales during the November-December holiday shopping season this year , up from 51.1% in the same period of 2023 , continuing its growing dominance in the e-commerce sector. Looking ahead to 2025, mobile shopping will continue to surpass desktop shopping in the months outside the holiday season, marking a major shift in online consumer behavior.
