Home Depot launches Magic Apron, an AI tool to improve the online experience for home improvement shoppers

It is learned that on March 6, according to foreign media reports, Home Depot launched a proprietary generative AI tool "Magic Apron" to provide shoppers with product and project information, help solve home improvement problems, and enhance the online shopping experience.

It is understood that Magic Apron is based on a large language model (LLM) and is trained with Home Depot's proprietary project knowledge, product catalog and Internet data. The tool has been launched on millions of product pages on homedepot.com and mobile apps, and plans to expand to the Pro B2B website to provide customized services for professional contractors and corporate users.

Jordan Broggi, executive vice president of customer experience and president of online at Home Depot, said the goal of the tool is to bring the expertise of in-store employees into the digital world, supporting customers with a proprietary knowledge base so they can complete home improvement projects more confidently. Magic Apron is available 24/7 and will continue to be updated to optimize features based on customer and employee feedback, while providing auxiliary support to store and contact center employees.

Magic Apron’s launch comes just in time for the spring sales season, and comes a day after arch-rival Lowe’s unveiled a similar AI chatbot, “Mylow,” to answer home improvement questions and provide conversational advice.

Home Depot has many years of experience in applying AI technology. Since 2015, the company has used Google AI technology to support multiple businesses, including the Sidekick application for employees, the smart search function of the shopping application, and the data analysis system based on the BigQuery database. In April last year, Home Depot further adopted Google Cloud AI to optimize inventory management, improve supply chain efficiency, and promote overall operational upgrades.

In the coming months, Home Depot plans to continue expanding the functionality of Magic Apron to more accurately meet consumer needs and further enhance the convenience and intelligence of home improvement services.
