Amazon Reviews are going to change?! These products will suffer

Since Amazon officially announced the average score weighting mechanism for Reviews last year, there has been no new major action in this module. However, many sellers who often operate variations have a feeling that Amazon is secretly debugging the new mechanism.

In the past two months, sellers have repeatedly reported that the Reviews of variants are no longer shared, and even after merging, they are displayed separately. However, many sellers also said that their Reviews are still displayed together and there is no change.

Is this an adjustment by Amazon or is it just a backend glitch? If it is adjusted, will it be adjusted back later? Today I will answer these questions that everyone is concerned about.

01

Is this a mechanism update or a bug?

This change has been confirmed by Amazon customer service, and the review mechanism is indeed being updated in the background.

The updated content is that the Review of each variant is displayed separately. Not only the variants merged by illegal operations, but also the compliant variant relationships cannot share Reviews.

Here is the complete answer from the customer service:

To summarize, before the change, only one variant of the same parent product was displayed on the front-end, and the number of reviews was the total number of all variants. After the update, consumers only see the number of reviews under the current variant.

This mechanism is still being tested and implemented, so some sellers will still be in the shared review status.

02

What impact will Review have on independent exhibitions?

First,

We usually use the variants of old products to promote new products, and give the variants with reviews to the new products to quickly get through the awkward period without reviews. This operation is obviously not possible after the update, but it also brings a benefit.

Originally, old sellers had hundreds of reviews, which scared new sellers. But now, the number has suddenly dropped to dozens or hundreds. This can make the difference between new products and old products seem smaller, and new products have more opportunities.

second,

After the variant reviews were displayed separately, the biggest blow was probably the merging of zombie listings. I won’t explain the principle of zombies, but the change of displaying each variant separately is to completely cut off this operation from the root.

As a violation of regulations, the abuse of zombies is a long-lived black technology, and sellers are still using it until recently. Some time ago, TNSO was spoofed and thousands of unrelated reviews were merged, all based on the principle of review sharing.

Although displaying Reviews separately can indeed solve this problem, this change will cause major changes in many areas. For example, displaying Reviews separately means that each sub-variant may be displayed in full in the search results.

Amazon originally hopes that there will be no duplication of products on the platform, which is why it has introduced a policy that requires sellers selling the same product to use the same listing.

If the sub-products were really split up and displayed separately, the number of products on Amazon would increase several times in a matter of minutes (and they would all be duplicates).

Amazon certainly doesn't want to see such a scene, so this function is carefully tested and modified bit by bit. There are even internal sources that this change has been tested for half a year.

This is why zombies can survive for so long, because changing Review sharing involves too many things. This change is of great importance, and Amazon will not implement it on a large scale without being sure, and it is likely to be tested for a long time.

03

To sum up

However, if you find that your product review is no longer shared, it may not necessarily be due to the update of this mechanism. It may also be because the variant itself does not comply with the merging regulations. After modifying it to comply, you can ask the Review team to merge it.

With Prime Day approaching, Amazon does not have the extra energy to carry out these censorship and cleansing, but a wave of reckoning after Prime Day has become a routine operation for Amazon.
