Tik Tok has been "banned" by many countries one after another. Will sellers be affected?

In the past two days, words such as "ByteDance" and "Tik Tok" have frequently been trending on the Internet . The reason was that the United States reported that it would ban Tik Tok's business in the United States, and then there was news that ByteDance agreed to divest Tik Tok's business in the United States. One stone stirs up a thousand waves. In just two days, whether the United States will ban Tik Tok has attracted a lot of attention.

As one of the most downloaded short video apps in the world, Tik Tok is very popular in overseas markets such as India and the United States. However, recently, Tik Tok has suffered a series of blows overseas. Whose cheese has Tik Tok moved, and why have Western countries banned it?

Tik Tok hit by many countries

On June 29, India banned 59 Chinese apps including Tik Tok and WeChat on the grounds that the activities of these apps were detrimental to India's sovereignty, defense, national security and public order. Tik Tok appeared first on this banned list.

Previously, a leaked internal email showed that Amazon asked employees to remove Tik Tok from any mobile device that "accesses Amazon email" by July 10 due to unspecified "security risks."

On July 15, the Korea Communications Commission announced that it had fined Tik Tok 186 million won (about 155,000 US dollars) because Tik Tok illegally collected 6,000 pieces of data from users under the age of 14 and transferred the data to servers in the United States and Singapore without notice.

On July 18, several Australian officials expressed concerns that Tik Tok would store the collected user data on servers in China to track and identify users, and therefore were pushing for a ban on Tik Tok.

As early as early July, there were constant reports that the United States would take repressive measures against Tik Tok, and finally the answer was given at the end of the month. On July 31, Trump claimed on Air Force One that he would ban Tik Tok. On August 1, Trump said he would ban Tik Tok from operating in the United States.

Why is TikToK frequently banned?

The "trigger" that prompted governments of India, the United States and other countries to take regulatory measures against Tik Tok was mainly data privacy and security.

Because Tik Tok's parent company ByteDance is located in China, the US government is concerned that Tik Tok may share user data with the Chinese government, either through intentional data requests or unintentional surveillance software. Tik Tok has previously been accused by multiple US government departments of threatening US national security and attempting to block its operations in the United States through administrative means.

In order to respond to the so-called "threat to data security" argument from some people in the US government, Tik Tok announced that it would make public the source code of its content review algorithm.

But is Tik Tok banned in many countries just because of data security issues? Can Tik Tok reverse the situation of being banned after strengthening user privacy protection? In fact, it is not that simple.

Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times, pointed out that Tik Tok has "two sins". One is that it challenges the high-tech hegemony of the United States, and the other is that Tik Tok brings together a large number of young Americans.

Tik Tok's parent company ByteDance also said that Tik Tok faces various complex and unimaginable difficulties in its global development, including the tense international political environment, the collision and conflict of different cultures, and the plagiarism and smearing of its competitor Facebook.

It can be seen that there are many reasons why Tik Tok is frequently banned by Western countries. It is not only due to problems with the application itself, but also includes complex factors such as international politics.

What impact does TikToK’s “ban” have on sellers?

Tik Tok is the international version of Douyin and a successful example of a Chinese mobile application going overseas. It has been downloaded more than 20 times worldwide and has been downloaded over 165 million times in the United States. It has 800 million active users per month , making it a new blue ocean for cross-border sellers to increase traffic.

Tik Tok and cross-border sellers have a high degree of target user overlap, precise traffic and strong purchasing power. Tik Tok's advantages over cross-border sellers are mainly reflected in the following three aspects:

1. The machine algorithm recommendation mechanism allows sellers to direct traffic more directly and accurately.

2. Seamless integration with e-commerce stores provides sellers with an additional channel to bring goods.

3. Incubate celebrities to sell goods through live streaming so that sellers can obtain huge traffic dividends.

The first wave of Amazon sellers have already tasted the benefits of Tik Tok. In April 2020, a seller directed his fans to his Amazon store, which received 720 million views on Tik Tok and doubled his product sales compared to 2019.

At present, more and more sellers are realizing commercial monetization through Tik Tok. There are also many courses on Tik Tok's overseas expansion on the market. Many sellers have begun to pay attention to and develop this platform. Now Tik Tok is facing the situation of being "banned". So, will the "ban" of Tik Tok have a big impact on sellers?

Some sellers believe that the news has not affected their research on Tik Tok, and they even spend more time than before researching popular videos and commercial cashing.

For cross-border sellers, Tik Tok is a platform for increasing traffic and conversion rates. The "ban" may reduce the sellers' channels for bringing goods , but generally speaking, it has little impact on sellers. In addition, Tik Tok focuses more on content and end-user experience, so the traces of commercialization are not very obvious, and it is impossible to track the actual conversion effect, so there are not many sellers who advertise.

Therefore, sellers who are currently researching Tik Tok should keep a calm mind, focus on researching popular videos and commercial monetization, familiarize themselves with the platform mechanism and gameplay of Tik Tok, and develop new platforms by analogy.

What do you think about the news that Tik Tok will be banned in the United States? Feel free to leave a message in the comment section.
