1. Steamfast Travel Steam Iron

It is learned that on December 14, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the expansion of the recall of Steamfast travel steam irons. In April this year, the agency first issued a recall notice for the product.

The CPSC said in the announcement that the iron's power cord may be damaged near the power cord sheath, causing the power cord to overheat, posing a risk of fire and burns. In addition, damage to the wires near the sheath may expose the copper wire, posing a risk of electric shock.

The recall involves all Steamfast brand Home and Away travel steam irons, model numbers SF-717, SF-720 and SF-727.

The product was produced in China and imported into the United States by Vornado. It was sold on websites such as Amazon, Vornado, and Steamfast, as well as stores such as Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond from January 2009 to August 2023. The price ranged from US$13 to US$30. Approximately 1.75 million units were sold in the United States, and approximately 9,000 units were sold in Canada.

Vornado has received 74 reports of incidents so far, including 18 reports of smoke, sparks, fire, overheating or damage to the power cords of the irons, as well as two reports of minor electric shocks.

2. Crystal Baby

Amazon, Walmart and Target, among other e-commerce platforms, recently announced that they would ban third-party sellers from selling "crystal babies" for children. This decision was made after U.S. regulators, lawmakers and safety advocates strongly urged retailers to remove water beads from their shelves, as well as evidence of the increasing fatal risks of such products.

An Amazon spokesperson said: “Due to safety concerns, Amazon will no longer allow sellers to sell water beads that are marketed to children, including toys, art supplies or sensory games.”

According to Amazon, third-party sellers must comply with the new policy and remove the products from their shelves by December 22. Amazon also noted that the popular water bead brand Orbeez will now be banned from sale, and that it prohibits sellers from selling water beads as ammunition for "gel guns" to children.

Walmart also said it would ban the sale of all water bead toys and crafts aimed at children under 9, both online and in its stores.

After Amazon and Walmart issued statements, Target also announced that it would ban the sale of such toys. A Target spokesperson said that due to safety concerns, Target will no longer sell water beads for children 12 and under. She added that Target will begin removing these products from store shelves and online websites next week.

Other e-commerce platforms, such as Etsy and AliExpress, have also announced that they have banned sellers from selling water beads. It can be seen that major e-commerce platforms are responding to the calls of lawmakers and safety advocates to remove such products from their shelves.

It is learned that the "crystal bags" are small beads made of highly absorbent polymer materials. After being soaked in water for five or six hours, they can "grow" a hundred times. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), if children accidentally swallow, put them in their ears or noses, or inhale them, they may quickly grow to a life-threatening size in the body. Because X-rays cannot show their fine structure, it is very difficult for doctors to diagnose them.

In November, New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. introduced a new bill to the House of Representatives to ban retailers from selling "Crystal Babies" to children. Currently, the bill has received support from some lawmakers.

Recently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of a Chinese-made air fryer due to the risk of burns.

The recalled products are PowerXL double basket air fryers, which are black or cinnamon in color. Each device has a white label on the bottom or power cord with the model number printed on it. Air fryers with model numbers DUAF-10 and DUAF-005 are included in this recall.

The CPSC announcement showed that the product was imported from China to the United States by Empower Brands and sold in offline stores such as Target, Walmart, Kohls, and major online shopping websites including Amazon. The price ranged from US$60 to US$190, and approximately 319,000 units were sold in the United States.

To date, Empower Brands has received 41 reports of the air fryers breaking while in use, including three reports of burns.
