The Indian government is launching an e-commerce platform, GeM, to compete with platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart. The Indian Ministry of Commerce is seeking comments on its proposal to open its online platform to the public. Currently, GeM is only open to Indian public sector units, government departments and their employees. This time it is open to the public in the hope of expanding the service into a full-fledged B2C platform. In the first phase, GeM will allow private businesses that have contracts with the Indian government to shop. The second phase will enable these private companies to purchase in bulk. By the third phase, individual shoppers will also be able to shop from the platform. IncomeIn fiscal 2018-2019, GeM's revenue was about $2.4 billion and is expected to touch nearly $7 billion in fiscal 2019-2020. status quoIn early 2019, GeM also launched a women-only page "Womaniya" on the platform to promote women entrepreneurs to sell handicrafts, accessories and other products. Currently, 143 million Indian Internet users are women, accounting for 33% of the total.
