Olive founder

Olive founder Sean Lane graduated from the University of Miami and received an honorary doctorate in public service from the University of Rio Grande. He initially worked in leadership positions in the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency, served five combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.

Around 2012, Lane returned to his hometown and found that prescription drug abuse was a serious problem. "When I returned to my hometown and looked at the workflow of the healthcare system, I was really surprised because there was no connection between them and there was no process for the systems to work together," Lane said.

Seeing the problems in the healthcare industry, he set out to create Olive. From the beginning, Olive had a mission to change healthcare.

Three characteristics of Olive

First, the system uses computer vision technology, cameras and computers to identify, track and measure targets instead of human eyes, and further process images to make the computer processing more suitable for human observation or transmission to instruments for detection. Machine learning enables Olive to make decisions like human healthcare workers.

Second, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), which enables programs to interact with any software interface like a human would, opening a browser and typing. The team provided Olive with historical data on how health care workers perform digital tasks, such as submitting an insurance eligibility check for a patient seeking surgery.

Finally, the NSA software can determine if a terrorist in the CIA database is the same person in the Homeland Security database. Olive relies on a unique skill developed by Lane’s previous work at the NSA to identify criminals from different government sources, namely the ability to match identities across databases.

Olive financing

In 2016, Olive completed a $15 million Series C round of financing from investors including Silicon Valley Bank, Khosla Ventures, Drive Capital, NCT Ventures, and Moonshots Capital. Olive plans to use this financing to promote its patient check-in system Queue across the United States.

In 2018, Olive completed a $32.8 million Series D round led by Oak HC/FT and Ascension Ventures, with additional investment from existing investors. The company plans to use the funds to further expand its AI solution Olive, which will help the healthcare industry automate processes.

In July 2017, Olive announced a partnership with RightPatient to enable Olive customers to take advantage of RightPatient’s unique biometric services and photo biometric capabilities.

In October 2017, Olive announced a collaboration with NCI, a leading provider of advanced information technology (IT) solutions and professional services to the U.S. federal government.
