Amazon announced Wednesday that it will open two cashier-less Whole Foods stores, where consumers can check out automatically without picking up their wallets. The two new stores are scheduled to open in Washington, D.C. and Sherman Oaks, California, in 2022.
It is reported that the technology is called "Just Walk Out". Consumers enter the store by scanning the QR code in the Amazon or Whole Foods APP, and use cameras and motion sensors to track the products they order and add to the shopping cart. Finally, customers scan the QR code again to leave the store and receive an electronic bill for checkout.
The technology is only available to customers with Amazon accounts; those without will pay using self-checkout lanes that accept cash, gift cards and other types of payment.
It is learned that Amazon used cashier-free technology in Amazon Go convenience stores and Amazon Fresh grocery stores as early as 2018. This will be the first time Amazon has used the technology since its acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017. The company currently refuses to disclose whether it will introduce the technology to more Whole Foods supermarkets.
Amazon said that even with the technology, it will still employ the same number of employees for these stores as it has in the past, but they will have different roles, such as assisting customers in checkout lanes or at the counter.
