The U.S. Postal Service processed more than 13.2 billion packages during the holiday shopping season!

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, during the 2021 holiday shopping season, the United States Postal Service (USPS) handled more than 13.2 billion pieces of mail and parcels, an increase of nearly 4% from 2020 and 12.7 billion pieces in the same period last year.

 

The United States Postal Service said that they began preparing for the holiday peak season as early as the beginning of 2021. Fortunately, its nearly one-year preparation has achieved good results in coping with the holiday surge. Currently, their daily processing capacity has increased by 13 million packages, and the volume of mail packages in the week after Thanksgiving has soared to 2.8 billion pieces.

 

Here's how the USPS is preparing for peak season:

 

  • Maintaining a stable workforce: Since the beginning of the last fiscal year, the company has hired more than 185,000 employees, including 60,000 pre-employment employees and 40,000 seasonal employees.

 

  • Expanded infrastructure: The company has leased 13 million square feet of additional warehouse space in more than 100 locations across the country to accommodate mail and packages, greatly improving the efficiency of package circulation.

 

  • Improved package processing equipment: Last year, the U.S. Postal Service installed 112 new package sorting machines and more than 50 large package sorting systems, increasing its daily processing capacity by 13 million packages.

 

  • Providing diversified transportation options: The company rented nearly 3,300 trailers during the peak season and realized cross-air transportation between other airlines. In addition, it expanded its ground transfer center network, adding 1.6 million square feet and more than 300 transfer centers, increasing long-distance transportation utilization while alleviating driver shortages.
