Walmart offers free Walmart+ membership to employees and reaches partnership with Spotify!

Walmart announced that it will provide free Walmart+ membership services to all its employees working in Walmart stores, distribution centers and logistics centers. This means that the number of Walmart+ members will increase by 1.6 million.

The Walmart+ membership program was originally launched in September 2020 with an annual fee of $98. In addition to free delivery, Walmart+ members can also use Walmart's Scan&Go contactless checkout, prescription and fuel discounts, early access to Black Friday deals and many other benefits. Walmart said the move is aimed at turning membership (including free delivery of e-commerce items and other benefits) into an employment benefit.

Walmart also announced a partnership with streaming music platform Spotify to offer special promotions for Walmart+ members. Starting Wednesday, March 9, all Walmart+ members will receive six months of Spotify Premium streaming service for free.

Spotify Premium includes ad-free streaming of millions of songs and podcasts, unlimited skips, play any song anywhere, and download music for offline listening. The new partnership with Spotify marks Walmart's second partnership with the streaming music platform.

The first collaboration was in May 2020, when Walmart began allowing customers who purchased select audio products on Walmart.com to try the music streaming service Tidal for free. After the trial, customers can continue to subscribe to the Tidal Premium service, paying a discount of $7.99 per month (usually $9.99).

It is learned that although Walmart publicly denied that the launch of Walmart+ is to compete with any specific service, Walmart+ has many similarities with Amazon's Prime membership. Although Amazon does not currently provide free or discounted Prime membership to any of its employees. But Amazon's Prime membership also includes free streaming access to more than 2 million songs and podcasts on Amazon Music, as well as free access to Prime Video streaming TV series and movies.
