According to foreign media reports, Canadian Pacific Railway's trains resumed operation on Tuesday after the company agreed to arbitration with its workers, ending a two-day strike.
"Following an agreement reached with our workers, we have resumed work as of noon Tuesday and we will return to normal freight operations as soon as possible," Keith Creel, president and CEO of Canadian Pacific, said in a statement.
Last Sunday, 3,000 locomotive engineers, conductors, train and freight yard workers went on strike as contract talks between Canadian Pacific Railway and seven workers over issues such as wages, pensions and working conditions reached an impasse.
Canada is a major exporter of grains and potash, an ingredient used to make nitrogen fertilizer, and a prolonged shutdown threatens to push up commodity prices and exacerbate supply tightness. A resumption of operations would help companies avoid facing more supply chain problems.
"While arbitration was not the preferred method, we were able to negotiate terms and conditions that were in the best interests of our members," said Dave Fulton, spokesman for the rail union TCRC.
The suspension has prompted some carriers to implement surcharges on affected trade lanes, and Maersk warned that vessel wait times at the Port of Vancouver have already reached 28 days and the suspension could further exacerbate delays in the Pacific Northwest.
