Maersk's e-commerce logistics unit targets $600 billion US market!

It is learned that Maersk is the world's largest container shipping company, transporting 12 million containers per year, and its services include ocean shipping, inland shipping, intercontinental railways and air transportation. Maersk E-Commerce Logistics (Maersk's e-commerce logistics business unit) is leading Maersk into the $600 billion US e-commerce market. Maersk E-Commerce Logistics operates a network of nine strategically located e-commerce fulfillment centers, providing logistics delivery services to 75% of the US population within 24 hours and 95% of the US population within 48 hours.

In 2021, Maersk made a series of acquisitions to incorporate e-commerce capabilities into the company's business model - with a focus on B2C and B2B fulfillment. Maersk's e-commerce footprint was expanded through the acquisition of Visible Supply Chain Management, a leading US e-commerce fulfillment company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, Maersk also acquired two e-commerce companies in Europe, B2C Europe and HUUB, and a logistics company in Asia, LF Logistics.

Casey Adams, head of Maersk eCommerce Logistics North America, said: “As online shopping demand continues to grow among U.S. consumers, our fulfillment network is designed to provide Maersk customers with a stronger and more convenient eCommerce supply chain through end-to-end offerings in direct-to-consumer delivery services, parcel delivery and supply chain visibility.

Maersk serves 80,000 customers worldwide through B2B supply chains. Maersk's e-commerce logistics platform includes an end-to-end management tool from source to final destination: shipping, inventory, package expenditure, order pipeline and invoice. Maersk's system realizes the accountability, simplification and global coverage of e-commerce logistics. At the same time, inventory closer to customers also means faster delivery at a lower cost.

Maersk e-commerce logistics business unit complements Maersk's integrated landside logistics supply chain business model in North America. Based in El Segundo, California, Maersk operates more than 60 distribution and fulfillment centers and transportation services. With the recently announced order for 300 electric trucks, sustainable landside transportation solutions will also be added in the United States.

It is learned that Maersk North America is also interested in acquiring logistics company Pilot Freight Services, which means that Maersk will add 87 delivery centers in North America and Western Europe to provide services for first, middle and last mile logistics across the United States.
