U.S. retail sales increased 8.4% year-on-year in March! Demand for clothing and luxury goods is high!

It is learned that according to Mastercard data, total retail sales in the United States (excluding automobiles) in March increased by 8.4% compared with the same period in 2021 and increased by 18.0% compared with the same period in 2019. Moreover, the growth level in March was almost the same as in February and only slightly higher than in January.

Data shows that in-store sales in the United States continued to rise in March, up 11.2% from the same period in 2021 and 9.4% from the same period in 2019. In addition, online sales in the United States in March fell 3.3% from the same period in 2021, but increased 83.7% from the same period in 2019.

It is worth noting that in March, luxury goods (27.1%), clothing (16.0%) and department stores (14.0%) industries in the United States all achieved double-digit growth. The catering industry (19.1%) and accommodation industry (6.4%) also achieved significant growth.

By region, the top five states for consumer spending in March were:

  1. Hawaii (+12.9%)
  2. Wyoming (+12.2%)
  3. Colorado (11.0%)
  4. Florida (+9.7%)
  5. Texas (+9.1%)

Steve Sadove, senior advisor at Mastercard, said that U.S. consumer spending remained very strong in March. As consumers resume spending in travel, live entertainment, indoor dining and outdoor activities, higher retail levels are expected in the future.
