U.S. grocery e-commerce sales fell 3.8% year-on-year in April, and order volume dropped 5.8%!

According to data from Brick Meets Click and Mercatus, following a year-on-year decline of nearly 6% in March, U.S. grocery e-commerce sales fell again in April, down 3.8% year-on-year to US$8.1 billion, and total order volume also fell 5.8%.

Data shows that in April, "buy online, deliver to home" orders accounted for nearly one-third of the total orders, and "buy online, pick up in store" accounted for nearly half. In recent months, the order volume of both delivery methods has been steadily decreasing.

Among them, the order volume of "buy online and deliver to home" decreased by 11% year-on-year, but the average order value climbed by 6% to US$8.4 billion. The order volume of "buy online and pick up in store" decreased by 2% year-on-year, and the average order value was US$81, a decrease of 7%.

It is worth noting that in April, "buy online, deliver to home" sales accounted for more than 20% of total sales, down more than 3% year-on-year. "Buy online, pick up in store" accounted for nearly half of total sales, down nearly 3% year-on-year.

It is learned that due to the impact of inflation, logistics prices increased significantly in April. Compared with in-store pickup, home delivery is more expensive. Therefore, most American consumers choose to pick up in-store.

In addition, the repurchase intention rate of online grocery shoppers in April fell by nearly 3%, and the vast majority of people will repurchase or purchase items from retailers they have previously purchased from. According to the survey, nearly 63% of online grocery shoppers said they would continue to make repeat purchases in May, an increase of nearly 8% year-on-year.
