USPS accused of "prioritizing Amazon packages"! Or face prosecution!

According to foreign media reports, the USPS will prioritize Amazon packages over all other packages and mail, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Strategic Organizing Center (SOC), which is composed of four unions.

According to an online survey conducted by SOC of USPS employees during the 2021-2022 holiday season, many sorters said they received instructions from managers to prioritize Amazon packages above other types of mail.

It is reported that the SOC submitted a document to the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) requesting details about the USPS's negotiated service agreement (NSA) with Amazon. An account called "Save the Post Office" posted the news on Twitter and said that the SOC plans to file an appeal, accusing "USPS management of forcing workers to illegally prioritize Amazon packages."

The SOC pointed out in the document that USPS management has been pressuring USPS employees to sort and deliver Amazon packages as quickly as possible, but has not exerted the same pressure on other packages; and that the USPS will not claim for physical damage caused to USPS facilities by Amazon packages; at the same time, Amazon may suddenly cancel certain types of USPS delivery services without notifying sellers.

“This evidence suggests that the USPS’s negotiated service agreement with Amazon may include violations that cause the Postal Service to violate its core legal obligations to not discriminate against its customers, to prioritize mail, and to provide efficient service to rural communities,” the SOC said.

It is understood that at present, SOC is seeking more evidence and documents about "USPS's priority processing of Amazon packages" so that it can formally file a complaint and appeal. It should be noted that Amazon is not the only market that has a contract (NSA) with the United States Postal Service. In addition to Amazon, there is also Etsy, and the agreement they signed is not accessible to the general public.
