Uncover the current situation of online shopping returns in the United States! These products have the highest return rate!

According to a survey of 2,000 American adults conducted by social shopping platform Slickdeals, 58% of respondents said they would like to avoid returns, 66% said the worst experience in online shopping is going through the returns process, and 67% said they hate returning purchased items.

The survey noted that 29% of respondents found online returns more difficult than offline returns, with concerns about having to pay for shipping (42%), the item being lost or not arriving at its destination (39%) and having to go to the post office (37%).

According to the survey, American consumers are most likely to return the following products due to dissatisfaction: phones (38%), clothing (38%), televisions (37%), computers (37%) and clothing accessories (31%).

Conversely, underwear (25%), groceries (25%), clothing accessories (24%), beverages (23%) and phones (22%) were ranked as the least return-worthy items.

Here are some other findings from the survey:

  • 56% of respondents said they would prefer to return items to the store where they purchased them rather than elsewhere
  • Most respondents said online return policies are too short, and their ideal return period is 30 days
  • 52% of respondents said they have changed their shopping habits and no longer need to deal with the return process
  • Consumers said the items least suitable to be returned to their original packaging were computers (35%), televisions (29%), home decor products (27%), headphones (27%) and furniture (26%).
  • 50% of respondents would rather give away their purchases (50%) than return them. 36% said they would keep them as a backup (36%), and 29% said they would resell them. If they had to return an item, 46% of respondents said they would prefer a cash back or a full refund.

According to a survey conducted by Pitney Bowes BOXpoll, each online return costs retailers approximately 21% of the order value, and some brands lose even more. As a result, 70% of retailers are actively trying to reduce return costs by addressing shipping or handling costs.
