According to the "Millennial Shopping Habits Trends" report released by CouponFollow, a real-time coupon code search engine and directory, 80% of millennials have purchased items online in 2022, up from 60% in 2019. In addition, more than half (56%) of millennials shop through mobile devices, which is also higher than the same period last year (36%).

The report shows that the most important factors driving millennials to shop online are saving money and finding deals (63%), while other factors include a smooth checkout process (42%) and product recommendations (22%).

CouponFollow also reveals some insights into millennials’ shopping habits in several key areas:

Social media is becoming more popular

Nearly eight in ten (78%) millennials follow brands on social media platforms, up from 57% in the same period of 2017. More than half (54%) of millennials say they look for purchasing recommendations on Facebook (28%) and Instagram (27%). In addition, 12% of millennials say TikTok is their primary social media platform.

The rise of cryptocurrency payments

96% of millennials report some knowledge of cryptocurrency, up from 90% in 2019. A third (30%) of millennials have used cryptocurrency for payments at least once in the past year, an increase of 8% compared to 2019.

Shift from physical stores to online shopping

73% of millennials have changed the way they shop due to the pandemic, with more than half (56%) shifting from physical stores to online shopping.

Prefer mobile wallets

In addition, a survey from Morning Consult shows that American millennials are very fond of using mobile wallets to pay for online shopping. 42% of millennials have used mobile wallets to pay, which is higher than baby boomers (21%) and Generation X (36%).

It is understood that millennials are the largest population group in the United States, totaling 73.2 million people. According to Coupon Follow's forecast, the spending power of American millennials will reach 2.5 trillion US dollars in 2022.
