Q4 US e-commerce marketing calendar! Don’t miss these hot sales points!

Drive Research, a market research company, recently reviewed the most important marketing dates in the fourth quarter of the U.S. e-commerce market. With the end of Halloween, Thanksgiving Day will become the next hot selling date, followed by Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.

  • Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 24.

  • Black Friday: Friday, November 25. It falls after Thanksgiving and is traditionally the start of the holiday shopping season in the United States.

  • Small Business Saturday: Saturday, November 26. Launched by American Express, it is a relatively new holiday to encourage people to shop small and support local businesses.

  • Cyber Monday: Monday, November 28. This is another newer shopping day designed to boost sales at online retailers.

Drive Research also surveyed Americans on their spending during this year's peak season, as follows:

1. Thanksgiving

According to Deloitte Insights, about 49% of Americans plan to buy "some" Christmas gifts for family, friends or teachers during Thanksgiving this year due to concerns about continued price increases.

2. Black Friday

The survey shows that about 69% of Americans will shop online during Black Friday this year, and 31% will go to physical stores to shop. Compared with last year, the number of online shoppers has increased. In 2021, 52% of people will shop online and 35% will choose physical stores.

3. Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 to support the growth of small businesses, and over the years it has grown into a major shopping holiday in the U.S. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), in 2021, approximately 56.4 million Americans shopped online on Small Business Saturday, and approximately 51 million people shopped in-store.

4. Cyber Monday

A survey from NRF found that online sales on Cyber Monday tend to be higher than offline sales because people are unable to go to physical stores during the weekdays. In 2021, online sales accounted for 79% of all retail sales on Cyber Monday.

According to a survey by Deloitte Insights, consumers have a very high willingness to buy the following products during this shopping season:

  • Toys, Hobbies and Clothing (77% of shoppers)
  • Electronics (57%)
  • Food and beverages (7%)
  • Pets (50%)
  • Health and wellness (56%)
  • Home and kitchen (49%)

Notably, gift cards are becoming increasingly popular, with 76% of Americans including them in their gift lists. On average, each shopper plans to spend $252 on gift cards.

Deloitte Insights also revealed the most popular children's toys for the 2021 peak season:
