Etsy Buyers 2022 Purchasing Trend Survey: How do repeat customers come from...

It is learned that Etsy is a global online marketplace known for unique and creative goods made by craftsmen from all over the world. According to its third quarter report of 2022, Etsy has 5.3 million active sellers. Every November, eRank, a top Etsy SEO website , surveys 1,000 consumers who have recently purchased items from Etsy to understand their shopping experience on Etsy. The purpose of the survey is to provide Etsy sellers with exclusive insights into shopper behavior, giving them a competitive advantage.


Highlights include shopper demographics; looking at buyers' household income; who they buy gifts for and for what occasion. Opinions are ranked based on Etsy seller metrics ranging from item price to packaging and shipping.


Of the 1,000 Etsy shoppers surveyed, 66.7% said product quality is an important factor in deciding to buy from a store more than once in 2022. What repeat Etsy shoppers value most is:

  • Free Fast Shipping

  • Seller response speed

1. Communication Delay

83.8% of buyers surveyed said that it is especially important to notify them of shipping delays. Clear communication with your buyers can help ease the pain when a package is delayed.

2. Photos are important

81.9% of respondents said that photos are very important to the buying experience. Additionally, 68% said that high-quality photos that accurately show the product will increase their trust in the store. Having high-quality photos that clearly represent your products is a sure-fire way to attract more buyers.

3. Description is important

81.4% of people say product descriptions are an important part of their buying experience. Focus on writing each description so that they are easy to read and provide clear product details.

4. Build buyer trust

81% of people say that positive reviews help them trust a store. Just having reviews for your store isn’t enough to attract buyers. 69% of people say that a store’s star rating is very important when deciding to buy from a store. Give your customers an experience that makes them happy to leave a 5-star rating.

5. Don’t ignore birthdays

Overall, 90.6% of buyers say Etsy is a great place to buy gifts. 52.8% say they buy birthday gifts on Etsy. Take advantage of this evergreen by incorporating birthdays into your keywords, products, and marketing plans.

6. Etsy buyers are high earners

More than 41.4% reported incomes above the U.S. median household income. * Consider offering a mix of product price points targeting multiple income levels.

Product Quality

66.7% of buyers said product quality is an important factor in deciding to buy from your store again. Make sure you provide your customers with the best quality products possible.


Free shipping

44.5% of participants said free shipping would influence their decision to buy from a store again. Whenever feasible, consider offering free shipping.


Fast delivery

Buyers are willing to wait for handmade and personalized products from Etsy. However, not too slow. 30.4% of respondents said fast shipping would influence their decision to buy from the store again.


Seller response

Communicating with your buyers is important. Keeping them informed helps them feel confident in their decision to buy from you. 21.2% of participants said that good communication would be part of their decision to buy from you again.


Coupon Code

Providing a coupon code at the time of purchase can motivate customers to buy from the store again. 13.4% of participants said that coupons would entice them to buy from the store again.

There are other things you can do to help people buy from your store again. Attractive order packaging, free items with their orders, and personalized notes from the seller will help win back customers.
