Social e-commerce According to eMarketer, e-commerce sales initiated or completed on social media platform sites in the United States totaled $53.1 million in 2022, accounting for 5.1% of all online sales, compared to $39.5 million in 2021. About 36% of U.S. internet users are social e-commerce buyers, with Facebook being the preferred site. Social shopping is most popular among Generation Z consumers.
Category Growth Online grocery sales grew significantly in 2022. According to Comscore, along with pet and baby products, groceries became the top-selling e-commerce category in the United States in 2022, with revenue of $219 billion; followed by apparel and accessories, with online sales of $175 billion, a year-on-year increase of 37%; computers and peripherals, with $117 billion; and consumer electronics, with $85 billion. Holiday Season Sales According to Adobe, U.S. consumers spent a record $211.7 billion online between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, up 3.5% year-over-year. During Cyber Week alone, the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, consumers spent $35.5 billion online. U.S. holiday spending was brought forward in 2022 as merchants conducted a large number of promotions in November, enticing consumers to increase their spending that month. According to Comscore data, November sales accounted for 44% of total holiday sales, up from 38% in 2021, while December sales accounted for 28% of total sales, down from 34% in 2021.
