The government has issued a ban! Amazon will be forced to cancel this feature

What do sellers do when they encounter slow-moving inventory?

Discounts, clearance sales, and low-price sales are all used to clear inventory in order to avoid paying high FBA long-term storage fees, even at the expense of profits and costs. Some sellers even choose to abandon many low-value inventories directly.

Earlier we also reported an exposure against Amazon, in which foreign media secretly investigated and joined the government to condemn Amazon for abandoning unsold brand new products.

Even though abandoning unsaleable inventory is commonplace for us sellers, if we can’t sell it, do we keep it and pay Amazon storage fees?

But European consumers obviously don’t think so. After this incident broke out, it was immediately bombarded by European netizens.

Both politicians and ordinary people have expressed their disgust and condemnation of the practice of discarding brand new goods. Wide-scale discussions and strong public emotions have forced European governments to pay attention to the disposal problem of e-commerce platforms.

Just today, the French government announced a new ban that restricts or prohibits businesses from destroying/discarding unsold goods.

France and Amazon's feud over unsaleable inventory

In the incident mentioned at the beginning of the article where foreign media broke the news that Amazon destroyed unsold inventory worth millions, it was Amazon France that was secretly investigated and exposed by the foreign media.

"The entire European Union now destroys more than 650 million euros of new/unsold goods every year," French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said in an interview with the media. "This is an appalling waste, a very shameful waste."

▲High-value new goods sent for destruction

The announcement of this ban will directly prohibit e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or other merchants from destroying or discarding new non-food goods, which will include clothing, home appliances, personal care and beauty products, etc.

The ban is expected to take effect in 2021. Before that, the French government will gradually take measures to restrict destruction and gradually strengthen the restrictions until it is completely banned.

Trends regarding disposal bans

In fact, in Europe and the United States, there have been constant reports of businesses abandoning large quantities of new inventory, but France officially announced a ban and gave businesses enough time to adapt and adjust, which shows France's determination to thoroughly rectify this serious waste this time.

France has taken the first step towards rectification, and in an interview with the media, the French Prime Minister also stated that the proposal would be submitted to the European Council for discussion.

This ban obviously has a good mass base, and every consumer will support the ban on brand new products being disposed of. Coupled with the promotion of many environmental protection personnel, it is only a matter of time before this ban is implemented throughout the EU.

Amazon Europe will eventually cancel the disposal function due to the ban. If we cannot destroy and dispose of goods, do we really have no way to deal with unsalable inventory? Let me sort out the more commonly used methods of clearing inventory.

1. Reduce prices.

In fact, it is a double-edged sword. Amazon is very sensitive to product prices. If you want to continue selling this listing, don’t use the price reduction operation lightly (if you don’t plan to continue selling it, you can do it at will).

2. Promotional activities

In and out of the site, deals, discount codes, coupons…it’s all in one word: “discount!” If you have already used discounts to clear out the stock, use up all the discounts you can. If you want to lose less, be careful not to overlap the discounts.

3. Outlet deals

Currently, this is still an invitation-based clearance method, which can also be considered a deal. It lasts longer than BD and can be carried out for 3 consecutive weeks.

Due to limited space, I have compiled the details into a stock clearance tips package. Sellers who need it can scan the code and get it from me~
