Many places in Europe are boycotting Amazon, and sellers' orders may continue to decline...

Black Friday is the most anticipated sales period of the year for Amazon sellers. However, this year's Black Friday falls at a time when the virus is most severe in Europe. Countries such as France and the United Kingdom have home quarantine orders, and people are prohibited from going out without necessary reasons. Some non-basic stores are prohibited from opening. This suggests that this top shopping period of the year can be completely monopolized by large online shopping platforms.

Some European metropolitan cities and even senior government officials called on people not to shop on Amazon before Black Friday, which was called a boycott of Amazon in Europe by Western media.

Barcelona mayor leads push to boycott Amazon

Spain's Cidade newspaper said that as the busiest weeks of the year are approaching, global online shopping giant Amazon is facing a shadow in Europe. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau called on Barcelona residents not to buy goods on Amazon or large online platforms during the "Black Friday Sale" and Christmas , but asked citizens to buy in local stores to help these small and medium-sized businesses that are close to the people and pay taxes correctly cope with the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Barcelona Mayor Ms. Clau said at the "2020 Barcelona Business Awards" ceremony: " We should not buy anything on Amazon or those large platforms . These giants not only do not pay taxes, but also have no added value to our city. We should go to those friendly shops, bars and restaurants that pay us a lot of taxes ."

Paris mayor issues boycott statement

Last week, the Mayor of Paris, Ms. Anne Hidlago, made a similar statement, leading a boycott against large-scale promotions led by Amazon.

Last week, the mayors of Grenoble and Poitiers, France, together with several senior officials of the Macron government, shouted the slogan "Christmas without Amazon" , asking everyone to give up shopping on Amazon.

This year, France is even considering banning Black Friday in France. On November 21, a petition called "Noel Sans Amazon (Christmas without Amazon)" supported by French political and cultural figures, environmental organizations and trade unions called on the French not to buy any gifts from Amazon during the upcoming Christmas season .

French Prime Minister Jean Castex also called on the French not to buy Christmas goods online, and to go to small and medium-sized stores once the home confinement measures are lifted. Because France's home quarantine order to control the virus lasts until December 1, Amazon has agreed to extend the "Black Friday" schedule to December 4 , as have other large French companies such as Fnac or Carrefour.

Spain fights against Black Friday

In recent years, Spain has been constantly criticizing "Black Friday", believing that "Black Friday" will bring forward the Christmas and New Year consumption peak season, thereby destroying Spain's traditional "big sale" which has only started on January 7 after the New Year , and it has plundered the market of small and medium-sized businesses very fiercely. In particular, these Internet giants have legally exploited tax loopholes and failed to fulfill their tax obligations.

Two Italian organizations call for restrictions on Amazon

According to foreign media reports, Italy is also calling on consumers to support local businesses at Christmas. The Italian retail organization Confesercenti and the consumer supervision agency Codacons jointly called on consumers to "shop in a store near you this Christmas."

It is reported that Codacons and Confesercenti also expressed support for the "Noel Sans Amazon" campaign launched in France. In addition, Codacons also asked the Italian government to study how to limit Amazon's "excessive power" on the grounds of "risks to competition".

Under Italy's coronavirus lockdown, non-essential shops are closed in high-risk red zones and shopping malls across the country are shut on weekends.

Codacons said: "As long as the closure measures imposed by the Italian government on stores remain in effect, e-commerce companies such as Amazon will benefit greatly because all Italians will switch from physical stores to online shopping. On the one hand, Italian consumption and production will benefit from online shopping, on the other hand, this will cause great damage to traditional retail trade and obvious damage to competition and trade. "

" The implementation of the second lockdown has created a very serious competitive imbalance between physical stores and e-commerce companies. While the former are required to close by the government, e-commerce companies are fully active and operate normally in monopolistic conditions. This is a very serious problem for physical stores as Christmas approaches," said Confesercenti.

At present, most European countries are also in a serious economically unfavorable situation due to the severe epidemic.

Given Amazon's continued "cold reception" in Europe, many sellers are worried about whether the year-end peak season activities can be carried out normally. Here, the editor reminds you that as of now, European countries have not explicitly stated that Amazon is prohibited from conducting peak season sales. Sellers can pay more attention to local news and Amazon policies and adjust their operation plans in a timely manner.
