What is GCash? GCash Review

GCash is a small-value payment system under the Philippine telecommunications company Globe Telecom. It is widely known as the Philippine version of "Alipay". Jack Ma has also promoted GCash and personally experienced scanning payment.

About GCash

Currently, the number of GCash users has exceeded 8 million. Thanks to the technology output and ecological empowerment brought by Alipay from China, local Filipinos have also ushered in their own era of safe and convenient "scan code to pay".

GCash was founded with the goal of "turning the phone into a wallet" and using one card for multiple purposes. GCash cards are introduced to use a "cashless" method, allowing users to enjoy convenient and effective services, just like Alipay under the Chinese version of "Ant Financial". With Alibaba Group and Globe Telecom promoting a more convenient "scan code payment" activity, GCash is more widely used by the public.

GCash Card Types

GCash MasterCard: (can be used for shopping mall and hotel transactions, online shopping payments, transportation Beep card, i.e. "tram card");

GCash American Express: (Can be used to pay electronic bills of US commercial shopping websites, such as Amazon, Ebay, etc.)

Register for GCash e-wallet

Open the downloaded software, enter your Philippine phone number (currently only Philippine phone numbers are supported), and then click "Next" in the upper right corner:

GCash will send a 6-digit verification code to your phone. Enter the 6-digit verification code and click "Submit" in the upper right corner. If you do not receive the verification code, you can click "Resend now" below:

Enter your personal information in order: first name, last name, birthday, address and email address, as shown in the figure:

After verifying your personal information, you can enter the referral code to get 50 pesos for free. The official website says it will take 5 working days to arrive in your account, but the reality is that sometimes it takes more than 5 working days.

After that, create a 4-digit password and remember it because you will use it often:

FAQ

Q: What does “verifying your account” mean?

A: The Central Bank of the Philippines requires a KYC audit. This is a one-time verification process to ensure that you are a genuine GCash user. After verification, you will have access to more features and GCash services, such as: cash out, remittances; use your GCash MasterCard to purchase products and make ATM withdrawals; cash out through PayPal, bank and debit cards; receive international remittances; and use GCredit.

After KYC review, your transaction limit will also change:

1. The maximum wallet balance increased from 40,000 Philippine pesos to 100,000 Philippine pesos;

2. American Express Virtual Pay total spending amount upgraded to 100,000 pesos;

3. The daily limit for airtime increases from 500 pesos to 100,000 pesos.

4. The limit on bills you pay increases from 5,000 pesos to 100,000 pesos.

Q: Can I change my GCash card number?

A: It cannot be changed.

Q: Can GCash open a large number of cards?

A: You can register multiple accounts. You can only register one GCash account for one phone card, which means you can only open one virtual card.

Q: Is there a limit on the balance in a GCash account?

A: Yes. Basic and Partially Verified are 40,000 pesos per month, and Fully Verified is 100,000 pesos per month. Each month refers to the natural month, and the amount will be calculated again on the 1st of each month.

Q: Can I receive a refund on GCash?

A: I used GCash to open a Netflix trial, and I was able to receive a refund when I linked it to the App Store. I used GCash's physical Mastercard to receive Booking rewards, but I waited two months before receiving them.

Development History

-GCash was founded in 2004.

-In February 2017, Ant Financial invested in GCash, the largest electronic wallet in the Philippines, with a 45% stake. Afterwards, Alipay sent a team of more than 30 people to empower GCash, bringing many complete technologies and rich experience, including the Ant Financial data platform, Alibaba Cloud's underlying infrastructure, Alipay's security, and risk control models.

-On October 25, 2017, GCash, the largest e-wallet in the Philippines with a history of more than ten years, was the first to launch QR code payment in the Philippines. It was only eight months after Ant Financial announced its investment in Mynt in February of that year.

-On June 25, 2018, the world's first cross-border e-wallet blockchain remittance was realized between two local wallets, AlipayHK in Hong Kong and GCash in the Philippines.
