Family Introduction

My grandfather was from Copenhagen, but somehow he immigrated to Cuba. He became deaf during the Spanish-American War and ended up in New York, where he couldn't even speak English fluently.

His father was a truck driver who made a living by delivering goods. He was a labor activist and worked part-time in the union. His mother was a housewife who took care of the children and later contracted tuberculosis.

Mr. Valentine is survived by his wife, Rachel; three children, Christian, Mark and Hilary; and seven grandchildren, according to the Sequoia post.

Biography

Donald Thomas Valentine was born on June 26, 1932, in Manhattan.

Starting in the mid-1950s, he worked for Raytheon, Fairchild Semiconductor, and National Semiconductor.

In 1972, Don Valentine founded Sequoia Capital , which has invested in companies including Oracle, Cisco, Yahoo, Google, LSI, and others.

In 1974, Don Valentine founded Capital Management Services with Capital Group and established its first venture capital fund with $3 million.

Don Valentine served as Chairman of Sequoia Capital for three decades, starting with his first investment in Cisco in 1987.

On October 26, 2019, Don Valentine died at his home in Woodside, California, USA at the age of 87.

On November 16, 2019, Hurun Research Institute released the "2019 Hurun Global Unicorn Active Investment Institutions Top 100 List", and Sequoia Capital ranked first.

Valentine and Sequoia China

As early as 2003, Valentine set his sights on the booming Chinese market and began to intensify his research on the Chinese market. After extensive contacts with a number of Chinese venture capital teams, Valentine chose to start Sequoia Capital China Fund with Zhang Fan, former director of DFJ Global Funds, and Neil Shen, former president and CFO of Ctrip.com.

Sequoia Capital China was co-founded by Neil Shen and Sequoia Capital in September 2005.
