Stanley M. Joseph started his first business in 1933 by opening a small retail appliance store in Northern California. In 1948, he and his brother Anthony began manufacturing kitchen hoods and selling them under the Stanthony name. Stanthony Corp was founded in 1950.

In 1959, Stanley Joseph was granted U.S. Patent 2,903,549 for a small electric grilling device, the first of its kind, designed for countertop use or built into a kitchen counter. He also patented a design for a combination hood and warmer. Details of Stanley Joseph's early experiences are recorded in his book, Adventures of a Salesman.

Distinctive Appliances, Incorporated, better known as Dacor, was founded in 1965; Stanley Joseph's sons, Stanford graduates and Vietnam veterans Michael and Anthony, led the company through the second generation, learning the business at an early age in entry-level positions. They eventually purchased the company from him in 1982.

In 1989, Stanley Joseph was elected as a charter member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Hall of Fame. His award record states that he developed the first fully self-contained hood for residential use under his company name, Stanthony. Stanley Joseph's sons, Michael and Anthony Joseph, were also inducted into the NKBA in 2004. Their honor states that they took the industry one step further by creating new patents for kitchen appliances. To date, the Joseph family is the only family to have three NKBA Hall of Fame inductees.

In August 2016, the company announced that it was being acquired by Samsung Electronics America, Inc. According to a company press release, "Dacor will maintain its corporate identity and brand and will not change its operations or U.S. manufacturing."

Partnership

In 2010, Dacor began collaborating with BMW Group DesignworksUSA to launch a unique 36-inch gas range and Discovery iQ controller interface for premium wall-mounted furnaces.

In June 2014, the Le Cordon Bleu network of culinary education institutions conducted a test of ultra-premium appliances. Its chefs tested a variety of high-end cooking appliances and found Dacor to be superior in many of the test parameters. As a result, Le Cordon Bleu approached Dacor to form a strategic partnership. Dacor products now carry the Le Cordon Bleu seal of excellence, and Dacor ovens and cooktops will be featured in upcoming Le Cordon Bleu culinary classes, demonstrations and academy kitchens.
