Insights into U.S. consumer peak season purchasing trends: Purchase volume has not yet reached its peak!

According to the holiday retail report released by Square, problems such as the US supply chain and inflation have not stopped retailers from selling, and promotions are still ongoing. On average, each retailer offers a 20% discount during the peak season.

According to a Square survey, American consumers are beginning to turn their attention to gift cards, with gift card sales increasing by 43% year-on-year, of which physical gift card sales increased by 46% and electronic gift card sales increased by 29%. However, it is worth mentioning that electronic gift card sales have been on an upward trend, which has also led to a 32% year-on-year increase in merchants selling gift cards.

In addition, Square also pointed out the purchasing behavior of American consumers during this year's peak season:

  • Demand for toys increased by 36%, resulting in a 12% increase in their average retail price;

  • Demand for laptops increased by 20%;

  • Demand for health and beauty products increased by 81%;

  • Jewelry demand increased by 26%;

  • Demand for air purifiers increased by 59%, but their average retail price fell by 21%.

Square said that online sales of books, magazines and newspapers also increased during this peak season, with merchants' total payment volume (GPV) increasing by 40%, compared with just 0.5% last year; GPV for online home goods retailers also increased by 32%, compared with just 5% last year.

It is learned that although the supply chain problem has not affected consumers' online shopping, so far, there has not been a significant peak in consumer purchases, but a relatively stable shopping state has been maintained.
